A Month of Broken Things

  1. Our refrigerator… our new refrigerator.  The compressor had to be replaced once before because it made a weird, whirring noise.  Recently it just stopped working and all the contents of the fridge and the freezer got warm.  The kitchen designer from whom we purchased the KitchenAid French door stainless steel lemon was kind enough to deliver a brand new loaner from his showroom, to use until the repair was completed.
  2. Two electric garage door openers.  Mine just stopped working, but it is 20 years old.  It was replaced a couple of days ago  and it is much quieter and smoother than the old one.  J.’s broke yesterday.  It’s a diabolical plot to get us to spend $700 (for both) on something no one will ever see or care about.
  3. The driveway is crumbling in spots where heavy contractor trucks sat while renovating the kitchen last spring.  This is not their fault – the problem is due to bad grading underneath the concrete by the original builder.  We're collecting estimates now before we become Sinkhole Land.  File this, also, in that “hate to spend money on this kind of stuff” category.
  4. Speaking of holes, autism strikes again.  We had two major holes in two major walls – two testaments to one summer from hell.  J. tried to patch the one upstairs at the end of the hallway, not very successfully, so it is now discretely concealed with a decorative mirror.  The downstairs powder room hole is another story.  We had a professional fix this one, although it turns out that my handy and talented brother-in-law, M., would have done it for us if I had only thought to ask him.  Well, it needed repainting anyway.  Chelsea mauve… a nice rich tan color with cool undertones. I repainted it yesterday and it does look pretty good. Now I hate the sink.
  5. I went to WeightWatchers today.  I wish that the scale was broken.
