The Medical Roller Coaster

The Great White
Wildwood, New Jersey

I love The Great White.  It’s a monster of a wooden roller coaster that lives and breathes on Morey's Adventure Pier, jutting off the sprawling Wildwood, New Jersey, boardwalk. Steep drops, breakneck speeds and lots of screaming abound.  Pure fun – we try to hit it at least once a summer. My son loves it; he will ride it again and again – until he can’t get anyone to take him on it anymore.  We usually end up sprawled to the side, on brightly painted carnival benches, prostrate and dizzy after a half a dozen rides each. But he’s always raring to go again. I do hope that I never get too old for rollercoasters.

However, the fun factor of the medical roller coaster… way low on the fun scale.

Last Wednesday the incision from L’s recent surgery began to ooze profusely at the very top.  We were in the hospital by Monday, she had surgery (to clean out an infection) on Wednesday and it’s finally looking possible for discharge later today.  Sounds simple – but the emotional and physical rises and descents of the week have been exhausting.  TGIF.

I would much rather be screaming on The Great White.

  2. Will relay all hugs and hellos. Yes, thank God for modern medicine. Now she needs IV meds 2x a day for up to 6 weeks!!!! We have to do it ourselves through (another) PICC line. But at least there are solutions and treatments. Thanks, as always, for your good wishes, which I am sending back to you double. Love, Linda

Yeah, Joey is so funny about his love of roller coasters. He does not like the kind that go upside down and your feet dangle, though. I don't blame him.
